Stable and hop kiln
5/23 about 15 yards south-east
of Laddin Farmhouse


GV II

Storage building or cider house enlarged into hop kiln and stable. Probably
late C17 to early C18 with mid- to late C19 extensions. Timber-framed part
has brick infill panels and slate roof continuing over C19 stable extension
at south-east end. Rectangular plan aligned roughly north-west/south-east;
two levels; north elevation has central C19 ledged door, loft door to right
above a blocked pegged door-frame and exposed framing three panels high from
cill to wall-plate. South elevation in brick has segmental heads to gable
end with stable door to right of window and central 5-pane window to loft.
Hop kiln: probably mid- to late C19 is attached at west end: sandstone rubble
first stage, brick upper stage, slate pyramidical roof; square plan; small
window with brick surround and segmental head in north elevation. Attached
to the south of the hop kiln is a late C19 two-storey brick extension. The
stable and hop kiln occupy a prominent position on the approach to Laddin
Farmhouse (qv). Included for group value. (RCHM Vol II, p 127).
