Farmhouse. Mid-C16, with mid-C17 and later additions. Rubble, timber-
frame with some wattle-and-daub and some brick infill; stone slate roof.
Floored hall with cross-wings, hall aligned east/west; the east cross-wing
of 4 framed bays, and south porch, mid-C16, porch enters hall at junction
with east cross-wing; rest of house mid-C17 with a further entrance at
junction of hall and west wing, into lobby; stacks at each end of hall with
diamond shafts, also a blocked C16 stack on south end of east wall of east
wing (shafts removed), with adjoining spiral staircase, also blocked.
South front: 2 storeys, gabled cross-wing to left (west): C17 casements,
2-light above 5-light, the latter with a transom, chamfered mullions, gable
of timber: multiple V-struts rising from king post; small gabled C19 porch
to entrance at junction with hall; C17 5-light casement to left, one to
each floor, ground floor with transom, mullions chamfered; porch at junction
with east cross-wing: close-studded first floor on rubble base, moulded
segmental outer doorhead of timber, west wall ground floor window with
diamond mullions; east cross-wing: C19 casement to first floor, close-studded
framing with mid-rail and straight angle braces jettied over C17 angled bay
window, partially obscured by 2 mid-C20 stone piers supporting jetty; gable:
close-studded to collar, V-struts to king post in apex. Side walls of this
cross-wing are framed on first floor, 3 square panels high. Interior:
ground floor of east cross-wing: south room (of 2 bays): moulded ceiling
beams, hearth blocked and room sub-divided by mid-C17 timber-frame partition;
north room (also of 2 bays) contains cider press (probably C17) and cider
mill. Rooms above retain traces of wall paintings on the beams, formerly
across whole surface, floral and fleur-de-lys designs in lozenges outlined
in red. (RCHM 1, p 57, no 13).
