9/156 Crossways House

GV II

House. Early C17, extended early C18 with C19 and C20 alterations. Rendered
brick, concrete tile roof. L-plan, rear wing early C17, extending to south-
west, front extending to north-west early C18 with gable-end stacks.
North-east front: 2 storeys, band to ground floor and rusticated quoins of
brick; 4 early C19 sashes; 3 similar windows to ground floor, entrance off-
centre left, wooden doorcase with flat canopy on consoles, half-glazed door.
Interior: Chinese Chippendale balustrade to staircase. Exposed framing in
rear wing with chamfered and stopped beams. Early C18 built-in dresser in
north-east of two rooms. The stack at north-east end of this wing, at
junction with early C18 front, has an adjoining sprial staircase. A clue to
the date of the C18 works is provided by a keystone reset in a gate pier about
25 metres north-east of the house (not included): "1742/TP", matched by the
initials "TP" scratched in lintel of south-east room fireplace.
