Description

SO 41 NE LLANROTHAL CP TREGATE CASTLE

4/163 Former cow house about 8 m
north-west of Tregate
Castle Farmhouse

GV II

Cow house. C16 origins, remodelled C18 and altered mid-C20. Rubble with
corrugated iron roof, five short bays aligned north-west/south-east and
now entered from south-east gable, four irregular openings, to north-east
flank, part blocked; low door to south-west flank; two doors and former
loft hatch to south-east gable; slatted cow house window to north-west
gable. The roof structure retains one cruck truss at south-east end
(adapted and encased) and the stub of another pair to north-west of centre;
the north-west truss has curved principals on tie (now amputated and a
secondary tie inserted) and had three struts to collar; evidence of
wide local-type purlins (two pairs) in north-west bay. This building was
presumably timber-framed and the present rubble walls are therefore
secondary. The north-west gable end retains some of the original white
render finish.
