5/21 The Old Rectory


Rectory, now house. Possibly C17 origins with alterations and enlargements
in early and late C19. Roughly coursed sandstone rubble, brick, Welsh slate
roofs, brick stacks. Rectangular plan aligned north-west/south-east. Two
storeys with attics and cellars. Garden front to north has 1:1:1 windows,
glazing bar sashes, gable fronts withcusped bargeboards to left and right,
central porch with glazed late C19 two-leaved door; attached to right-hand
side is a two-storey late C19 out-building. Interior noted as having open
well early C19 staircase with stick balusters, mahogany handrail and carved
brackets. North gable has early C19 first floor 2-light casement identical
to those used in the nearby stables (qv). The house occupies a prominent
position close to the Church of St Mary (qv) and is included for group value.
