Buildings of the
Benedictine Abbey of
St Michael and all Angels
School, chapel and house. Circa 1853-4 by Edward Welby Pugin for F C Wegg-Prosser. Roughly coursed limestone and sandstone with limestone and brick dressings. Stone stacks, some brick shafts. T-plan with school aligned roughly east/west, chapel at eastern end and house in cross-wing at west end. One to two
storeys. South elevation has gable front to left with 3-light mullioned and
transomed bay window to ground floor, 3-light mullioned window to first floor
and single light to attic. To the right the school has four groups of windows,
each with three trefoil-headed lights separated by three weathered buttresses.
Verge to right with gabled bell-cot. To right of verge lower chapel part with
front lean-to containing doorway with shouldered head. East elevation of chapel
has 2-light traceried windows, each light of which has trefoiled head. West
elevation to house has mullioned and transomed windows and timber-framed porch
with trefoil decoration to bargeboards.
