Church of St Michael

II*

Church. Early C14 with C12 remains, extensively restored 1889. Sandstone
rubble with tile roof. Comprises a nave with west bellcote, a lower chancel
offset to the north and a south porch. The west wall has a C19 lancet window
between two buttresses, and a gabled bellcote with two bells. The north wall
of the nave is of two bays and has windows with chamfered surrounds and round
heads, probably C18. The south wall has a similar window to the east of the
porch and a C19 trefoiled window to the west. The open gabled porch is probably
C17 and has a collar-rafter roof. The doorway has a chamfered surround with
straight-sided pointed head. In the east wall of the nave there is a chamfered
lancet. The chancel is early C14. On the north side there is a lancet window
and a doorway with C19 pointed head. The south wall has two windows: a trefoiled
ogee light and a lancet. The east window is of three lights with intersecting
tracery. Interior: nave and chancel have scissor-braced rafter roofs. The
chancel arch is chamfered in two orders, the inner order dying into the responds.
High up in the wall to the south of the arch is a C13 window now opening into the
chancel. In the south wall of the chancel is a trefoiled piscina. The sandstone
font, a round bowl with moulded stem, is probably C13. The chancel windows con-
tain late C19 glass. (RCHM, p 89).
