12/16 Royden House and No 17

8.7.77 Dryden House)
House with smaller house adjoining to left. Late C18 with mid-C19 and mid-
C20 alterations and additions. Brick, roughcast to right side; plain tiled
roof with gable-end parapets and stacks. Three storeys with dentilled eaves
cornice. Three bays; openings of outer bays on ground and first floor have
been altered and the windows are C20; ground floor has two tripartite sashes
with plaster segmental heads, engaged columns and moulded cornices; outer bays
of first floor have simpler tripartite sashes and there is a central 9-pane
sash; three second floor 6-pane sashes. Central entrance retains its distyle
Doric portico and there is a half-glazed door with a moulded architrave and
transom light with Gothick traceried glazing bars. Interior not inspected.
No 17 adjoins left gable end; mid-C19; brick with machine-tiled roof, decora-
tive ridge tiles and a pair of stacks at left end of ridge. Two storeys;
single bay; 3-light first floor window; bay window and 4-panelled door with
transom light beneath shallow hipped-roofed canopy on moulded posts. Despite
the C20 alterations (when C19 bay windows were removed) this house is included
as it occupies a prominent site facing the southern approach to the village.
