Barn, stable and granary about
20 yards east of Fairfield
Barn, stables and granary. Mid-C17; remodelled c1712 with mid-C19 and mid-
C20 alterations. Brick with some timber-framing having rendered and brick
infill and partly refaced; plain and machine-tiled roofs. L-plan. Barn:
four bays aligned north/south; wagon bay situated second bay from south end
with opposed archways. There is a row of rendered panels below eaves level
in the west elevation with short upper corner braces. Main east elevation:
left bay is of two levels and has a two-course band at upper floor level;
beneath it is a blind winddw with a gauged flat head and a stone keyblock
inscribed "W I P/ 1712". To the right of the wagon bay are two multi-paned
windows. At the right end is a five-bay west return with a multi-paned window
facing east. Interior: collar and tie-beam truss with two collars and struts
to north of wagon bay. Otherwise tie-beam trusses with raking struts. At
south gable end is a stable and granary: two levels with cogged eaves cornice;
two levels; header ventilation courses; east elevation has a C20 window inserted
into an original opening with a cambered head. External brick steps to loft
door in west elevation. The barn, stables and granary enclose the former farm-
yard to the north and east of Fairfield House (qv) and face its original C17
front elevation. Included for group value.
