House (once divided into three tenements). c1600, altered mid-C19; restored
mid-C20. Timber-framed with rendered infill on sandstone rubble plinth;
machine-tiled roofs. Hall and cross-wing plan; hall part of three framed
trays aligned east/west; large chimney in central bay (backing onto through-
passage) with brick ridge stack and also ridge stack at left end of ridge;
cross-wing of two framed bays situated at east gable end of hall part. Two
storeys. Framing: four panels from sill to wall-plate; short straight braces
in upper corners; south gable end of cross-wing has a jettied first floor on
brackets and an arch-braced tie-beam above; collar and tie-beam trusses with
struts; cross-wing trusses have two collars. South front elevation: windows
are all C20 leaded casements; hall part has a ground floor 2-light and 3-
light window and a large C20 oriel; first floor has a 2-light window and
two single-light windows; main entrance to left of centre has a C20 door
reached by a flight of sandstone steps. Cross-wing has a ground floor C20
oriel window and a first floor 2-light window in its gable end. Slate weather-
ings at first floor level of hall part and tie-beam level of cross-wing.
Interior: stop-chamfered main ceiling beams. Very large sandstone fireplace
(approximately ten feet wide) in former hall. C20 addition at rear. The
house is said to have been divided into three needlemakers' tenements during
C19.
