House. c1600 with mid-C19 alterations and additions; restored mid-C20.
Timber-framed with rendered infill on brick and sandstone base, brick
refacing and additions; plain tiled roofs, partly half-hipped. Four
framed bays-aligned east/west (west bay is lower in height); chimney with
brick ridge stack in third bay from east end; from second bay there projects
a single-bay north wing; east end bay has a C19 external brick chimney on its
north side and a C19 single-bay south addition. Two storeys and attic partly
with dentilled eaves cornice. Framing: four panels from sill to wall-plate;
short straight braces in some upper corners; east gable end has a jettied
first floor and attic floor on shaped brackets but has been refaced to attic
level in brick; collar and tie-beam trusses with struts; trusses of main
part have two collars, the east end truss having two struts to lower collar,
two struts to upper collar and a single strut in apex. West end truss (of
possible additional bay) has four struts beneath collar and V-strut in apex;
north wing has gable on its east side with two struts to collar. East street
elevation: east gable of main part has two ground floor 12-pane sashes with
cambered heads, a 15-pane first floor sash and an attic light; south wing
to left has two similar ground floor windows and a first floor 3-light casement;
north side of main part has a small 2-light first floor window; east side of
north wing has a first floor 8-pane sash window and an attic light and two
doors, the larger door on the left has a moulded architrave and forms the
present main entrance; beneath the first floor window is a continuous tiled
weathering.- Main south elevation: main part has a 3-light casement and a
rectangular light on both floors, a ground floor 4-light casement and a first
floor 2-light casement and square light in the west bay, and, at the junction
of the west bay with the main part, a ledged and battened door and transom
light. In the angle with the C19 south wing is a small C19 gabled addition
with a 2-light first floor casement and, in front of it, a C19 lean-to with
a rectangular light in its south elevation and a door in its west elevation.
Interior not inspected. The C19 wing facing the street was once used as a
shop.
