Farmhouse, divided into two dwellings. Late C16 with mid-C19 and mid-C20
alterations and additions. Timber-framed with painted brick infill, plinth,
replacement walling, refacing and additions; plain tiled roofs. Hall and
cross-wing plan; hall part of two framed bays aligned north-west/south-east
with external chimney at south-east gable end; cross-wing at north-west end
is of two framed bays and there is a large chimney at the junction of hall
and cross-wing with a brick stack at south-east side of cross-wing roof
ridge. Two storeys and attic with dormers. Framing: two rows of panels
survive at first floor level of hall -part with short straight braces in
some upper corners; there is a small area of close-set studding at ground
floor level in the south-west elevation; cross-wing has four panels from
sill to wall-plate but much replacement walling at ground floor level; swept
braces in some upper corners of north-east bay; collar and tie-beam trusses
with raking struts at gable ends. South-west front elevation: C20 casements
throughout (leaded in hall part); ground floor of hall part has two 3-light
windows and a rectangular light; first floor has four 2-light windows and a
single-light window; main entrance to right of centre has a lean-to canopy
on brackets and a C20 door. Cross-wing gable end has a 2-light ground floor
window and an attic light and from it projects a C19 external chimney. Main
entrance to other dwelling in north-west side elevation of cross-wing.
Interior not inspected. Extensive C19 additions at rear. Before 1900 it
is recorded that the building was used as a needle factory and underwent
enlargement to provide workrooms. (VCH 3, p 123).
