Description

REDDITCH B SALTER'S LANE (north side)
SP 06 NW

1/143 Barn about 20 yards
north-west of Birchensale

GV II

Barn. Probably C17 but altered in mid-C18 and mid-C19. Timber-framed with
brick infill, plinth and additions, some weatherboarding and plain tiled
roofs. Seven bays aligned north-east/south-west; wagon bay third from north-
east end has opposed cart entries with double doors. Framing: partly three
panels from sill to wall-plate, partly long rectangular panels; long straight
braces across some lower corners; no trusses visible. South-east elevation:
(from left) lean-to addition with catslide roof to first two bays; C19 wing
projects from third bay; rectangular lights in fourth bay; double doorway in
fifth bay; C19 wing projects from sixth bay. Both C19 wings are of two
levels with dentilled eaves cornice and header ventilation courses to upper
levels; ground floor openings and attic lights have cambered heads. Interior:
intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses with two struts; two tiers of trenched
purlins. Very substantial timbers visible inside probably of medieval origin
and re-used. C19 pulley equipment retained at south-west end.
