1763 for George Prescott, extended N and S by the Meux family in
early and late C19. Red brick, Portland stone dressings, slate
roofs. 3 storeys. 5-window W entrance front with slightly
projecting pedimented centre having balustraded 1-storey portico
and 1st floor Venetian windows. Modillioned cornice, parapet.
Forward-curving 1 storey colonades to small outer wings with
brick modillioned cornices and pediments facing courtyard. E
garden elevation with full height canted window bay and Gd floor
and 1st floor flanking Venetian windows. Balustraded parapet and
bracketed cornice continuous with N and S, 4-window, early C19
additions, which have large Gd floor Venetian windows with paired
Greek Ionic columns. Further 4-window late C19 extensions on N
with similar details; S end has 5-stage French Renaissance style
square tower with banded stone courses, 4th and 5th floors with
applied pilasters and shell headed windows. Terracotta frieze and
stone balustrading.
Interior has good entrance hall on W side, divided by Venetian
screens with Adam style detail. Grotesque painted central
ceiling, semicircular staircase on N. E centre room with very
gocd, reused, early-C17 arcaded panelling with Corinthian half
columns, foliate ornament and figured console brackets. N room
on E front has rich early-C19 deep coffered-octagonal plan ceiling.
