6/54 The Acorn
House. Early C17, E part late C18. Timber frame infilled with painted
brick, ground floor cased in painted brick, brick built E part. Steep
old red tile roofs with catslide outshut to rear (N) of E extension
overlapping older part to W. A 2-storeys, 2 cells, internal chimney plan
older house probably with central lobby entry originally, but taller 2
storeys E extension provided a new entrance and E room. 2 C19 casements
to each floor of the house front and flush segmental brick arched
casements in the extension. The timber frame is exposed internally on
both floors of the house. The upper floor extends into the roof space
where the lower parts of queen-post trusses and braced purlins are
visible. Living and dining rooms have exposed beams, the dining room
with exposed ceiling joists. Timber lintels to both original fireplaces
but dining room fireplace infilled.
