House. C16, W end late C17, divided in C18, SE wing c.1913 in place of a
large bakehouse. Timber frame with narrow red brick infill, ground floor
cased or rebuilt in red brick, plastered on S. Steep old red tile roofs.
Roughcast SE wing. A long L-shaped 2-storeys house facing N with W gable
on roadside and entrance door into 1½ storeys SE wing with 2 gabled
dormers, 3-light casement window and Tudor-arched battened door on LH. E
bay a parlour formerly jettied to N. 1½ bays W part has thinner timbers,
unjowled posts, straight braces, 1½ storeys, large external S-side
chimney with tiled offsets, brick gable to road with purlin ends and
tile-creasing over tie-beam, 2-light casement upper window and 2-light
and 4-light casements to ground floor. This wing probably replaces an
earlier service wing and adjoining cross-passage. S front has
wide-spaced studs and storey-height panels. Straight braces in walls at
corners. 2-light casement to 1st floor: double flush sash window to
ground floor. N side has exposed frame with convex curved corner brace
and wide-spaced studs. C18 2-light flush leaded casement to 1st floor
central room. Sun fire insurance plaque no. 364473. Interior has axial
floor beams, and remains of Jacobean carved panelling with guilloche
band. Queen-struts and collar trusses in clasped-purlin roof formerly
cross-roofed at parlour bay. Long splayed scarf joint in purlin, and old
flat rafters. Added bay at E, beyond parlour.
