9.12.77 Yew Trees
House. C16 or earlier, C17 lower N part, N end extension c.1973. Timber
frame exposed at rear with red brick infill but front cased in
whitewashed brick, roughcast S gable, dark weatherboarded N gable. Old
red tile roofs. A 3-bays framed house of 2 storeys and attics facing E,
set back from road, with 1½ storeys N part and low C20 extensions at N
end. C18 E elevation with dentil eaves and 2 flush sash windows with 3/6
panes on 1st floor, 6/6 panes on ground floor. Door in middle with
doorcase and open pediment on consoles. Further small window to RH. 2
chimney stacks with diagonal square shafts. Rear wall has massive
exposed timbers, brick nogging, and a series of vertical grooves cut in
the red brick panel next SW corner. Flush sash windows, double and
single with 6/6 panes. 2 gabled dormers. Jowled posts, corner curved
tension braces to S end, with large central post. Aisled braces to
3-bays main clasped-purlin roof with curved wind braces. Close studding
in partition to S bay. Butt-scarfed purlin. Axial beam in larger middle
bay on moulded corbel brackets. Mason-mitred mouldings to dining room
door. N part has clasped-purlin roof with straight wind braces.
