GV II

Barn. Late C16, 2 S bays a nearly contemporary enlargement. Timber frame
dark weatherboarded with steep old red tile roofs. A tall 8-bays
unaisled barn facing W with S gable to road, 2 double door projecting
gabled porches on W with single winnowing door to rear of midstray.
Lean-to addition between porches. Massive step-jowled posts, mid-height
rail tenoned in-line, curved tension braces above rail. Soffit of
wallplate has holes for 4 stakes of wattle-and-daub infill between the 3
studs between the bay posts. Curved braces to heavy squared cambered
tie-beams. Queen struts and collar clasped purlin roof with wind braces
removed. Principals not diminished above purlin. Butted scarf joints in
wallplates squinted on soffit only. Side notches on posts and tie-beams
for temporary bracing in erection.
