Verderer's lodge and lookout, now a house. C17 probably for 1st Baron
Ellesmere (d.1617) or 1st Earl of Ellesmere (d.1649), refaced c.1715,
low N kitchen extension c.1725, N annexe c.1825. Red brick, the exterior
now faced in Flemish bond. Different shades of red and larger bricks in
N extensions. Steep old red tile roofs. Wide plastered cove to
cantilevered E corners of roof. A rectangular 3½-storeys house with
large external gable chimneys and a narrower projecting E frontispiece
containing stairway and entrance hall topped by 2 gabled dormers. This
front has a wide 4-centred arched doorway with battened painted door, a
2-light lattice leaded window over, and a plastered sundial above the
2nd projecting brick floor band. Springing from the sidewalls of this
front part wide plaster coves are carried up to the corners of the roof,
supported by timbers tailed back into the gable brickwork. Similar
sundial on S chimney for afternoon sun. Interior has fine moulded string
oak staircase with turned balusters and acorn finials and pendants to
newels, rising through 4 levels in the frontispiece, a single large
ground floor room with chamfered crossed beams, 2 rooms over with
moulded beams and jowled central post to partition, moulded plank doors
with strap hinges, similar subdivision on 2nd floor with simpler doors,
and stair continuing to an attic chamber across the top of the house.
