GV II

Former inn and stable, now 2 houses. Built to serve Grand Junction canal
opened 1799. The Swan Inn until refused licence in 1848 when landlord
convicted of receiving stolen barley. Coal merchant and general stores
up to 1960. Red brick house (Lockside), with painted brick N part and
remaining bay of half timbered stable (Dudswell Wharf). Slate roofs but
stable steep red tiles. A 2 storeys and basement building with steps up
from towpath level facing W. Stable adjoining on N, and formerly
extending further N, projects on W but was entered at lower level from
E. Near symmetrical W front to Lockside of 3 windows and door to left of
centre. Recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes to 1st floor, small pane
casements to Ground floor. Flat gauged arches. Iron railings to towpath.
Door in angle of stable and one sash window to each floor of Dudswell
Wharf. Included for group value. (Berkhamsted Review Jan(1984)10-12).
