1/52 Spring Cottage
House. '1777' carefully cut in beam in E room, parallel N wing late C20.
Timber frame exposed at gable ends with painted brick infill, painted
brick S front, red brick rear block in stretcher-bond, steep old red
tile parallel roofs. A 2-storeys, 3-bays, end chimneys plan house facing
S with C20 similar block at rear facing road. Lean-to W end outshut. S
front nearly symmetrical with 3 1st floor windows and door in middle.
3-, 2-, 3-lights small panes casement windows. Segmental arches to
ground floor. Panelled door central with moulded surround, pilasters,
and full entablature. Glazed fanlight and panelled reveals. N block
facing road has 2 windows to each storey and recess over central door.
3-light casement windows and plank door. Small windows flank internal E
gable chimney. Clasped-purlin roof structure with queen-struts below
collar in gable trusses. Later external W gable chimney in S slope.
Interior has unusual plan with opposed doors, stair in middle bay open
to E bay main room with chamfered cross-beam with inscription and only
large fireplace. Axial beam in W bay originally unheated. Formerly
Shepherd's Cottage for shepherd of Beechwood Estate. (RCHM Typescript).
