Description

GREAT GADDESDEN GADDESDEN ROW
TL 01 SW
(South side)
3/93 The Lane House
26.1.67 (formerly listed as
Old Lane Farmhouse)
- II

Farmhouse, now a private house. Late C16, mid C17 rear stairwing and
brick chimneys, C19 E extension. Timber frame, painted brick infill,
painted brick E extension, steep old red tile roofs. An irregular T-plan
2-storeys house facing S with cross range of service buildings at W end,
and gabled stairwing at rear. 5 flush casement windows with small panes
to each floor. Entrance by boarded door under gabled porch into higher E
extension. Original house in middle of 3-cells with internal chimney
offset to N side to allow stair in lobby entrance. Wide spaced
storey-height framing and narrow bay for chimney. Hall has RH end of
chimney lintel jointed into vertical post, pointing to an earlier timber
framed chimney replaced by the present brick stock about a century after
the house was built. Fine brick chimney with 2 octagonal shafts at SE
corner probably contemporary and built when former service rooms changed
to parlour and house possibly linked to former separate kitchen at NW
now reroofed as catslide. (RCHM Typescript).
