Early-mid C18, (formerly known as Nos 3 and 3A). Improved for
Mr F W Speaight by A Winter Rose C1911. Timber frame construc-
tion, rear range possibly earlier. Red brick front of 7 flush
sash windows with thick glazing bars in moulded frames, 3 on
slightly recessed right hand portion. Parapet and 4 box dormers.
2 storeys and attics. Gauged brick windows lintels. 2 stuccoed
floor bands. Left hand portion has good central doorcase,
probably replacement: added reveals and lushly carved scrolled
brackets carrying flat hood. Adam style fanlight. Flush panel
door. Right hand portion has tall door surround with half
glazed door, probably C1911. Basement windows with C18 wrought
iron grills. Interior has large staircase hall on left ground
floor, the staircase probably taken from elsewhere. Exposed
timber frame to walls. Front right room with bolection-moulded
fireplace surround and an overmantel with a segmental pediment
carried on winged cupids (Mervyn Macartney, Recent English
Domestic Architecture, Vol 5 (C1913)).
