GV II

Garden walls and steps. Probably c1845 for second Marquess of
Salisbury, but following the lines of the Jacobean gardens laid
out in C17 by Solomon de Caus, John Tradescant and Montague
Jennings. W retaining wall and belvedere steps are c1970. The
walls enclose the upper garden and three sides of the lower
garden containing The Moze. They have red brick lower halves and
trellis brick upper parts. Moulded courses and cornices. The
trellis work is in alternate sections of diamond and oval
patterns, divided by panelled piers. Steps from upper to lower
garden in 2 flights. Belvedere is in two flights replacing
