Real Tennis Court and Riding School, the latter now an exhibition
centre. Built 1840 by the Second Marquess of Salisbury. Facade
to Palace courtyard is a Tudor style composition with imitation
windows, 2 storeys and attics. Red brick. Plain tiles. 2
light blank windows faced with Welsh slate. Gables with
roundels. Left side projects forward slightly and has 2 gables
and a small gabled tower on right. 2 4-centre arch moulded brick
doorways. Right side has a crow-stepped gable over a 3-light
elliptical-arched 1st floor window. Similar right hand tower
completes the picturesque group. Plain brick rear elevations,
the tennis court with continuous upper-floor bands of sash
windows. Interior of tennis court has York stone floor with
original numbered markings painted on floor and walls. Sloping
roofs over 3 colonnaded viewing galleries. One of four or five
such courts in the country.
