House, formerly farmhouse. Earlier C15 open hall, floored over
in C16/17. C15 or C16 right gabled cross wing. Earlier C17 left
gabled cross wing and rear staircase tower. Renovated mid-1960s.
Plastered walls. Flint and red brick plinth. Steep plain tile
roof, the ridge having a broad C17 red brick chimney stack on
left centre. 1-window centre bay has ground floor and boxed
attic only. 2-storey right wing has 3-light restored casements.
Left wing has upper floors jettied on thin joists and exposed
studwork in narrow scantling. Small square 2-light attic window
with ovolo mullion. 3-light 1st floor window with replacement
mullions. Gabled porch in reused red brick. Rear stair turret
is at right angles to the C17 wing, its gable end having a 3-
light ovolo-mullioned window and its rear wall 2 2-light similar
windows on ground and 1st floors. The upper right window retains
2 diamond mullions and the ground floor ones have small stained
glass panels which may be C17. Stair intact. Interior of C17
wing has moulded 4-centre arch fireplace to ground floor and
simpler one to 1st floor. The house is said to be associated
with the nursery rhyme 'Little Miss Muffett'. (RCHM Typescript).
