House. Early C16, extended early C17. Remodelled, cased and extended
c.1870. Timber frame. Stock brick casing, some rendering. Slate roofs. 6
bay range with rear passage, possibly hunting lodge or lodgings range
cross wing of a once larger house. Externally all C19. 2 storeys. 6
window front. Entrance in shaped gabled porch in 3rd bay from left.
Plank door with strap hinges. Ground floor canted bay to right of
centre. Sashes with cambered heads; Diagonally set brick band and
cornice. C18 ridge stack to right of centre, recapped. Original left end
stack with C19 cap. Coped gable end parapets. Cat-slide to rear over 2
storey passage built as continuous outshut. Left return relieving arch.
Rendered 2 bay C17 wing to rear left has 2 light casements. C17 rendered
end stack with ovens. Right return: entrance to passage behind main
range. C19 1 bay 2 storey block to rear with gable to rear right with
extruded stack. Interior: ground floor right, richly carved C16 oak
ceiling: moulded bearers frame 16 panels with leaf and flower cusp
terminals and bosses, curved brackets from moulded capitals of
semi-octagonal wall posts. Herringbone bracing in large panels on end
wall. Rear passage has arched braces from posts with moulded capitals on
both floors. Curved tension braces. Arched braces, some hollow
chamfered, from heavily jowled wall posts to cambered tie beams. Tenoned
purlins. Angled, curved struts to principal rafters to 4 bays. To right,
double purlins with a curved X brace from principals to tie beam. Curved
wind braces. C17 wing has arched braces to queen strut, clasped purlin
roof with wind braces. The house is on a moated site. (RCHM 1910: RCHM
