Primary school. 1951-52. H.T. Swain of Hertfordshire County
Council. Steel frame with horizontal precast concrete panels
on Hills 8' 3" system as modified by Hertfordshire. Low
pitched and flat roofs. Single storeyed. Compact plan, with
tall hall and lower dining room opening from the hall and
classrooms and staff room, organised around an open courtyard.
Hall with solid sides and fully glazed end window 5 bays wide,
rising to low pitched roof. Dining room fully glazed, as are
classrooms, except for a low band of solid panels beneath the
windows. Metal framed windows. Prominent eaves/cornice.
This was the first of the second generation of Hertfordshire
schools on the Hills 8' 3" system, characterised by tighter
planning, following changes in Ministry of Education cost
controls.
