TL 2923 BENINGTON TOWN LANE
11/19 Nos 5, and 7
2 adjoining houses. No 5 C16 open hall house, Cl7 inserted floor
and chimney backing onto cross-passage and front heightened, rear
wing c.1980. No 7 Cl7, possibly as an extension to No 5, altered
in C19 as separate house. Timber frames with weatherboarded
apron to front. No 5 white weatherboarded front but plastered W
gable. No 7 roughcast. Continuous old red tile roof carried
down over rear outshut. Old red brick central chimney with
ovolo-moulded cap to No 5. Internal E gable chimney to No 7.
Later external red brick W gable chimney at No 5. No 5 is a 2-
storeys, 3-cell plan house facing S, with large central chimney
rising through front slope of roof. 3 windows to each floor. 2
and 3-light flush casements. Small boarded door up 2 steps with
dripboard on shaped brackets and plaque inscribed 'MDX'.
Interior has chamfered and stopped axial beam and joists in hall
and large open fireplace, edge-halved scarf with bridled butts in
old wallplate, head sockets for hall window and diamond mullioned
window in former E wall, soot blackened rafters in clasped purlin
roof with curved wind brace, wattle-and daub panels, curved
tension braces, and exposed timber frame. No 7 is a 2-storeys,
2-cell, end chimney plan house facing S, with rear outshut.
Front has 2 windows to 1st floor. 2-light flush casements.
Ground floor has door on left and canted bay window to right.
Boarded door with glass bullion panel and rectangular fanlight
under drip-board on shaped brackets. Large mass of red brick
gable chimney at E.
