Barn and shelter shed attached. Early/mid Cl7 barn, late C18
shed. Barn of red brick in irregular bond with flint panels in W
gable and weatherboarded top to each gable. Steep old red tile
roof to 2 porches and adjoining main roof but roof now largely of
corrugated sheets. A tall unaisled 8-bay barn facing S with 2
gabled porches, in 3rd and 6th bays. High external plinth. Added
buttresses to W corners of barn. Vent-slot in each bay with oak
lintol. Unusual composite construction with shallow bay posts
rising against wall from brick bases with curved braces to
cambered tie-beams (all but 3 posts cut off below braces). Butt-
purlin roof with 2 purlins to each slope, staggered in line.
Collar beam trusses with inclined queen-struts above and below
collar. Numbered joints. Face-halved bladed scarf joints in
rear wallplate under tie-beam ends. 5-bay shelter shed running S
from SE corner of barn, open to yard on W, and with a flint rear
wall with brick piers, which is a feature along Whempstead Road
to E. Red brick wall at S end is a fragment of a Cl7 brick barn
now destroyed by fire. Steep pitched roof now of corrugated
iron. Clasped purlin roof with inclined queen-post and cambered
tie-beams. Edge halved scarf joint in front arcade plate carried
on square posts.
