(formerly listed as Nos 53 and 55)


House, now 2 shops and a house. C17 or earlier, front altered in
2 stages in C18, C19 shop front to No 53, C20 recessed shopfront
to No 55. Timber frame plastered with steep old red tile roofs.
A large 2-storeys, U-plan group with street range facing E. Rear
wing at SW (No 53A) entered from a narrow passage from the street
through the street range, and another wing at NW. Front in 2
parts. S part (No 53) has 3 upper windows under a bold eaves
cornice. Square-headed flush box sash windows with moulded
architrave and 6/6 panes. Good early C19 shopfront with paired
pilasters, full entablature, central double glazed doors, and
shop windows in many places. N part (No 55) has three upper
windows under same bold cornice. Segmental headed sashes
similar to No 53 but with keystones. Shopfront recessed behind 2
iron posts under a simple fascia. Central double glazed doors
and shop windows of many panes over brick stallriser. Front
range has had a central chimney removed from a position a third
from S end. Internal gable chimneys to each end. (RCHM
(1911)140 No 15).
