7/81 No 3 (Layston Cottage),
and No 3A
22.2.64 (formerly listed as Layston Cottage
No 3 and No 3A)

House, now 2 houses. Early C16 hall house with 2 crosswings, C17
and C18 N range, C19 single-storey gabled front extension and
general renovation. Timber frames roughcast with diaper
pargetting to jettied middle range. Steep old red tile roofs.
Flint and slate gabled front wing with red brick dressings. An
irregular 2 storeys and attics building facing W with the N
crosswing and the later N parts separated as No 3A. Parlour wing
at S, entrance into through-passage at N end of hall behind
inserted central chimney. Central chimney in N range with rear
stair in angle with N crosswing. W front has gabled wings.
Gabled dormer to centre, front jetty to hall with bull-
nosed joists, underbuilt jetty to projecting N crosswing, canted
tiled bay window to S crosswing, C19 wood casements to upper
floor, triple-sash window with small panes to hall and 4-panel
raised-and-fielded door. Interior has clasped-purlin roofs,
exposed timbers, and a 2-light diamond mullioned wondow with
shutter groove at head of stairs in No 3. (RCHM Typescript).
