9/6 Dam and Cascade to lake
at Gilston Park 500
- metres SE of house
Dam and cascade. About 1851 remodelling of dam of an early C19
ornamental lake, by P C Hardwick for John Hodgson Esq, in the
park of Gilston Park. Overflow in centre now in the form of a
naturalistic waterfall or cascade over a high cliff of artificial
stone, similar to the grotto in the conservatory at Gilston Park
added in 1887 by A W Blomfield for E S Bowlby Esq. The dam was
used to drive an electric turbine c1902, the foundations of which
are to the S of the cascade. An historic garden feature and an
early use of artificial stonework. Adaptation for generating
electricity in 1902 of technological interest.
