Dovecote at Nine Ashes Farm 40 metres NNE of house

Dovecote. Late C16 ('dovehouse' noted in a description of 1600
(HLHS (1979) 35): 'dove and hen house' in sale of 1898 (HRO)):
interior converted to 3 storeys farm cottage but not in use.
Tall octagonal red brick dovecote with plinth and dentilled eaves
course. Steep octagonal slate roof topped by large octagonal
lantern. Small arched opening on each face (now glazed)
sheltered by wide moulded cornice supporting ogee lead roof with
ball terminal. Very thick walls plastered inside many include
nest boxes under inner lining. Modern 3-light casement windows in
cardinal faces. Small dormer on E. Single storey kitchen
addition at N. Inserted chimney against wall at NE. Main door
recessed on S under segmental arch. Modern half-glazed door. A
C16 dovecote of special interest surviving from Sir Thomas
Forster's mansion. Part of the group of historic buildings at
Nine Ashes.
