House. 1837 (on large panel recessed in side chimney on left).
Sawn timber frame with brick nogging, plastered. Steep old red
tile roof. A small 2 storeys house linked to Village Hall group
at right by a high plastered screen wall,- and presenting a
symmetrical jettied gable end to the street. Modern rear
extension not of special interest. Tall external red brick
chimney on left side with datestone. Single storey canted bay
window with tiled roof on side facing Village Hall. Central 6-
panel door with fielded panels and small upright casement window
to each side. 2-light leaded casement window over with label.
Heavy cusped bargeboard. A pair of very richly carved early C18
consoles enriched with undercut swags and shells are re-used to
support the ends of the front jetty and are its most notable
architectural feature. Deep narrow joists carry the jetty. This
jettied house is the left hand pavilion of a formal symmetrical
composition centred on the former school (now the Village Hall).
Carved early C18 brackets support the jetty of No 49, the
corresponding pavilion on the righthand qv. This estate village
town planning scheme was carried out when the Calvert family
owned Hunsdon House. An historic early C19 estate house with
features of special interest. An essential element in a formal
symmetrical group centred on the Village Hall.
