HUNSDON
HUNSDONBURY
(east side)
Mistletoe House and The Coach House
(Formerly the stables to Hunsdonbury)

GV
II

Stables, now 2 houses. Later 1840s. Red brick with stone
dressings and steep hipped red tile roofs. Stable complex around
2 yards probably built when the former rectory was altered and
became Hunsdonbury and the seat of the Calvert family in the
later 1840s. Now converted to 2 houses. Entrance is into theW
side of the S yard between in-curving brick walls with moulded
brick plinths and square terminal piers capped by sandstone
blocks and stone balls. A symmetrical 2 storeys coach house with
5 upper windows and central door forms the E side of this yard.
3-light casements with arched glazing bars, 2-light over 6-panel
flush beaded door. Double doors to coach houses below, sheltered
by a lean-to roof. Openings have flat brick arches with
intersecting joints at the centre. A lower range on the N side
has2 similar windows with pivoted lights each side of a central
passage to the N yard, surrounded by converted stable buildings
with similar windows and hipped roofs, stable doors and ovolo
moulded plinth. Cl9 cast iron pump against N wall of S yard has 2
rings on the barrel, a spurred spout and an acorn cap. Moulded
6-panel doors on upper floor of the coach house, apparently C18
re-used. A handsome red brick stable complex in restrained Gothic
style, retaining much of its original character. Part of a
picturesque group with the East Lodge.
