House. C16 or earlier. Timberframed plastered house with steep
old red tile gabled roof. a 3-unit lobby entrance house with a
massive central chimney one third from N end and extending to
rear wall. S gable end rebuilt in brick incorporating an
internal gable chimney. 2 storeys, cellar and attic house facing
W. Large 2 storeys C19 brick rear wing at NE with recessed sash
windows. Front has 3 windows to each floor and door in line
with chimney. Modern panelled pargetting of basketwork or
roughened panels with applied rose motifs. 4-panel modern door
in broad wooden surround with moulded edge and flat moulded hood.
C19 2-light casement windows almost flush with horizontal glazing
bars and dripboards on small brackets. Cross beams and axial
beams carry the upper floor. Prominent C17 brick T-shaped
chimney above roof. Possibly the house called 'Veylys' in C16.
Former name was from an Elizabethan Henry Whyte (HLHS (1979) 30).
An historic timberframed house. Part of a group in this part of
the village Conservation Area.
