Dairy with studio over, now a house. Late C19. For G S Pawle
Esq probably by H A Pelly. Grey brick colourwashed white. Tiled
roof in plain and fishscale bands. A large square 1.5 storeys
former ornamental dairy with studio over built for the Pawle
family when the stables and coach-house were removed to the W of
Abbotts Lane. 3-window front to road (N) with 2-light mullioned
casement window flanked by 3-light windows under segmental
arches. Corners bevelled and corner of steep hipped roof carried
by a double scrolled wooden bracket springing from a moulded
corbel. Very tall roof with 2 large gabled dormers with heavy
bargeboards and a stepped arrangement of small square lights
interrupted by a moulded collar between the shaped brackets
supporting the dormer's wall plate ends. A rooflight in the
upper slope gives added light to the studio. 3 round arched
Diocletian windows on the E side, 2 with glazed doors. Small
windows and 1 similar dormer on the S side. Double glazed door in
round arched opening in middle of W side. Modern glazed porch. A
picturesque Arts and Crafts Style dairy-cum-studio of special
architectural interest. Part of a group with the former Walnut
Tree House (Ash View Rest Home) on the W. Included for group
value.
