House. Early C16 former crosswing at N incorporated in mid C17
rebuilding of hall range with stair turret and rear kitchen, S end C18
additions for inn. Restored 1975. Timber frame on brick sill, roughcast
with steep old red tile roofs. A 2-storeys, 3-cells, internal chimney,
lobby entry plan house facing E on corner site. 2-bay S extension at
full height but different floor levels, and 2 storeys rear kitchen wing
with large external gable chimney. Hipped roof shallow stair turret
behind stack of main range. Chimney a third from N end with parlour at
N. Frame of lower C16 crosswing exposed complete up to wall plates
during works in 1975 heightened in C17 as part of general rebuild. E
front has 4 windows on each floor. 3-light flush casement windows with a
canted oriel to left of door. The interior has axial beams, stair rising
from parlour at N, but smaller stair in kitchen wing to chamber over and
to hall range chambers. C18 S part designed with a high room over a semi
basement, probably a cellar. Formerly The Bell PH. (RCHN Typescript).
