GV II

Manor house. Late C17, C19 brick casing to E and S, attic floor removed
1947, N wing extended 1960. Timber frame roughcast with steep red tile
roofs. Brick casing to front and S end of main house. Atall double-pile
house facing E formerly of 3 storeys and cellar but reduced to 2
storeys. 1 1/2 storeys kitchen wing with end chimney set back on N side.
Unusual transitional floor plan with arched tunnel running through shared
chimney stack of the 2 rooms in front range for access from the front
lobby to the stair at rear. Rear part marginally deeper than front part
and corner fireplaces heat adjacent rooms at SW. Symmetrical E front
with 2-storeys central porch and single-storey canted bay windows. Boxed
sash windows with 6/6 panes. 6-panel door flush beaded. Interior has
ovolo panelled dwg room at SE with moulded cornice, dado rail and C19
marble fire surround. Chamfered beam with bar stops in NE room (dwg
room). Good moulded closed string staircase with turned balusters and
balustrade at landing. Cross window with leaded plate casement. Panelled
overmantle to chamber over dwg room. Face-halved bladed scarf in
wallplate next stair. (VCH (1914)88).
