Includes Nos 50 and 52 Bell Street.
Late C16 (RCHM Typescript). Exterior changed in late C17 or early C18,
C18 windows and porch, C19 shop fronts. Timber frame plastered under
hipped old red tile roof. 2 storeys. S end gabled but with lower eaves
at rear over former inn gallery. Main range fronts E to The Square and
dragon beam at corner indicates it was probably jettied to both streets.
2 storey wing in Bell Street has higher Gd floor and may be later. Deep
chamfered moulded axial beam in No 52 with 2 bar stops indicates fine
quality of main range. Large internal chimney stack with attached shaft.
Long E front of pargetting with raised panels over low black plinth. Wide
coved eaves 8 flush box sash windows spaced 6 and 2 with 6/6 panes.
Projecting triangular pedimented Doric porch with 2 freestanding columns
on low square bases with chamfered tops. C19 shop front with plinth as
stallriser and continuous entablature continuing in Bell Street. RCHM
suggest gallery erected at rear in later C17 unlike usual inn gallery
formed in framework of building (RCHM Typescript). Important C16
building at town centre in C18 disguise.
