Description

TL 32 SE BRAUGHING CAMBRIDGE ROAD (A10)
(west side)

5/11 Milestone in Hamels Park
(600m to W of lodges)
-

- II

Milestone. Possibly late C17. Portland stone. A broad stone
pillar about one and a half metres high like a thick gravestone
with a rounded top and chamfered arises. Inscribed in large well
cut letters, on the E face 'XXVIII/Miles From/Shore
Ditch/Church/London': on W face & XXIII/Miles 3/4
from/Cambridge'. Possibly the oldest milestone in the county,
and probably moved to its present position by Wm Freeman of
Hamels c1745 when the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust did improvements
at the 28th milestone for which he gave land. (Branch Johnson
(1970) 111, illus. 108).
