5/27 Brockholds Farmhouse



House. Probably C15 main range, C17 crosswings, late C17
inserted floor and chimney in hall, renovated in later C19.
Timber frame plastered with panelled pargetting and stucco
plinth. Upper floor red tilehung with cusped tiles from window
sill upwards. Steep old red tile roofs. H-plan 2-storeys house
facing W. Main range represents an open hall with further bay on
N. S crosswing replaces earlier service wing. C17 N parlour
wing with large external early C18 chimney on N with gabled small
extension beside it. Large C17 central chimney with lobby entry
and probably a former stair behind and axial chamfered beams (one
with pyramid-and-bar stops) to rooms each side. Lower lean-to
rear part of S wing. Symmetrical W front of 2 gabled
bargeboarded wings each with a flush triple sash window. Central
4 panel door with moulded surround and full entablature as flat
hood. 2 triple sash windows to each floor. Side purlin roof.
Jowled posts on ground floor carried former S wing structure.
