1911 by H Clapham Lander. Built as 'Holmsgarth', the Letchworth Co-operative
Houses, an experiment promoted by Ebenezer Howard as a means of providing
co-operative living for professional people. A quadrangle of flats and
houses was originally planned, but only the first 2 phases were completed.
Ebenezer Howard lived at Holmsgarth from 1911 until 1920. North-west front
facing Broadway Circus of 2 storeys with prominent central feature comprising
3 storeys, twin gabled centre flanked by towers with concave pyramidical
roofs. Tiled roofs with brick stacks. Roughcast wall with brick ground
floor, centre with brick ground and first floors. Brick pilaster strips
to quoins of towers. Two and three light casement windows with tile labels
continued to form strings. Ground floor windows of centre with round-arched
heads. Main entrance with side lights and hood carried on cut brackets.
The range is linked at the rear by glazed covered ways to 2 storey terraces
and flats around a quadrangle.
