Turnpike toll house, now a dwelling. Late C18, extended and altered C20.
Roughcast brick. Steeply pitched tiled roof. Originally 2 bays, extended
1 bay to left. 2 storeys. Entrance with plank door to right. 2 light
small pane casements, slightly recessed with segmental heads. First
floor right hand window has an iron bracket for left light possibly
relating to original tollgate function, next to this is a clock in a
round chamfered opening with a bracketed hood. Cogged brick eaves. Right
gable end parapet and internal stack. Original left end stack now
adjoins added left bay with a slightly higher ridge. Left end ground
floor bow window and first floor 2 light casement. Attached to right is
a low 1 storey weatherboarded outbuilding with a steeply pitched roof, a
further lower outbuilding to far right with a stack. Lean-to outshuts to
rear. Interior not inspected. The house is set at an angle so as to
provide a view of the road as it approaches Barkway. Listed for
historical interest.
