BARLEY LONDON ROAD
TL 3938 (North side)
House. Early C17, extended later C17. Altered and extended C19. Timber
frame. Panelled rendering and weatherboarding. Steeply pitched thatched
roof. 5 bay lobby entry, originally 2 cells, extended at both ends. 1
storey and attic. Weatherboarded dado. Central entrance in gabled half
glazed C20 porch. To left 2 C19 canted oriels, bracketed, small pane
casements. To right a horizontal sliding sash, a single pane and a 2
light casement, all flush frames with hoodboards. Two 3 light dormers
with eyebrow thatching, leaded lights in metal frames to right. Axial
ridge stack to centre, rebuilt cap. Hip to left end, weatherboarded
ground floor, pentice board, 2 light attic casement. Half hip to right
end, an entrance and a first floor canted oriel with a cornice, exposed
plates. To rear mixed fenestration and a Sun Fire Insurance Marker. A
C20 link to C19 weatherboarded, slate roofed former cow shed attached
to C19 2 storey roughcast brick, slate roofed block to right, scattered
casements, white brick stack. Interior: exposed framing, jowled posts
with arched braces to cambered tie beams, ogee stop chamfered bearer and
fireplace lintel, inglenook with bread oven, spice cupboard.
