20.1.88 Bridle Ways
GV
II

Range of 2 barns, now garage and store. E part late C16 or early C17, W
part C17. Timber frame on low brick sills, dark weatherboarded with
steep old red tile roofs. E part a tall 3-bays barn with doors in middle
bay facing S with rear door in same bay. Clasped-purlin roof with collar
and queen-struts gable truss. W bay divided by C20 partition. Cast iron
lattice casement windows in upper part of walls. Wider 4-bays W part has
lower part of S side open on brick piers, and cladding removed from
lower part of back wall giving views over countryside. Swept jowled
posts, long straight braces to heavy cambered tie-beams. Long inclined
queen-posts support single clasped-purlin in each roofslope. Old flat
rafters. 2-light cast iron lattice casement windows in end and upper
wall of each bay. Marks of applied white painted boards to W gable in
form of a V-shaped roof truss probably applied by E.L. Lutyens when he
retained the barn range as part of his scheme c.1911 at Hill End (now
