5/73 The Forge
II
House. Circa 1500 former open hall house, floor inserted c.1600 and N
bay heightened, stack rebuilt in brick in C18. Timber frame roughcast
with steep old red tile roofs. A 1½-storeys house facing W with N part
higher and with a large chimney bridging the change of height. The
middle is the hall originally open to the roof with cross-passage across
its N end, S bay presumably a parlour at the 'upper' end of the hall was
originally unheated, and the service rooms will have been on the site of
the N bay either heightened or rebuilt in C16 or early C17 as a new
parlour end. The inserted floor in the hall was probably accompanied by
a timber-framed fire-hood which was replaced by a brick chimney with
stair to rear (E) in C18. W front has plank door under gabled tiled hood
into lower part of house by chimney. 3-lights flush casement windows
with rectangular leaded lights. 3 to ground floor and 3 gabled dormers
at eaves. Interior exposed frame, close-spaced studs, axial floor beams,
jowled posts, heavy straight tension braces recessed at back of studs.
