and wellhouse

Well, wellhead gear and wellhouse. 1872 provided by Darton family of
Temple Dinsley when local ponds had dried up in a hot summer. Well said
to be 226ft deep, now capped off. Octagonal wellhouse open at sides has
steep pointed octagonal slate roof and 8 chamfered stout oak posts now
raised on concrete pads from octagonal Yorkstone step. Cast iron gear
arranged E-W over top of well. Rectangular openwork moulded iron trestle
with battered ends, longitudinal bars at half height carrying lower axle,
another near top with another axle and top member swept up in a
segmental curve. Moulded braces sweep in to support lower bar and then
intersect as cross-bracing to upper panel. 2 large 4ft diameter
flywheels with handles one each end of lower axle. Cog of 15 teeth
engages a gear of 96 teeth on upper axle also carrying flanged iron
drawing pulley. A larger gear of 60 teeth on lower axle for unclear
purpose. King-post roof in softwood. (Branch Johnson (1970)93: inf
