2/101 2 barns adjoining on
north side of farmyard
at Offley Holes Farm


2 barns. Both C17, W barn roof altered in early C19. Timber frames on
brick sills with dark weatherboarding. Steep old red tile roof to W barn
but tiles replaced by corrugated sheeting on E barn. 5-bays tall E barn
has central gabled projection to N and double doors to yard on S in same
bay. Jowled posts, long convex curved tension braces to sill, long
straight braces to cambered tie-beams. Clasped-purlin roof with one
purlin to each slope trapped between principal and the notched end of
the convex curved inclined queen-posts. Face-halved bladed scarf joints
to wallplate over each post. 4-bays W barn has a projecting porch on S
in 2nd bay from E. The W end bay of slightly later construction. Heavy
jowled posts, straight braces to straight tie-beams. Straight tension
braces in walls. Side purlin roof.
